Why All Women Should Detox

Mamas, you are in for a real TREAT! Today, we have guest contributor Heather Munnelly, Nutritional Therapy Practitioner and Detox Specialist, here to talk to us about why it is so important and I dare say, vital, to truly detox. I am not talking about your run-of-the-mill green juice fast, but a deep cellular detox. Heather tells us WHY it is so important for all women to detox and start anew, especially those of you wanting to conceive. This is something that I truly believe in and I am so thrilled to share our expert on the topic, Heather, with you today! So without any further delay, here she is! 

Detox has completely changed my life, and I don’t say that lightly. If you met me in my early 20’s I was a mess; riddled with allergies, food intolerances, sugar addiction, anxiety, guilt, over-exercise, looking 6 months pregnant from bloat after eating, restless sleep, low energy, brain fog, dull skin, hair falling out, pre-hashimotos, depression, brittle nails, and so much more.

Every doctor I went to told me I was fine. They prescribed drugs for my symptoms that only made things worse. Eventually I stumbled upon some information about plant based eating on the internet and decided to commit to a plant based life. I became vegetarian and quickly thereafter went strict vegan. I bought a juicer and began fasting using homemade green juices. Though I didn’t know what I was doing yet, I knew that was the beginning of my path back to health, and not just to be “as good as I was before” rather I wanted to heal and become better, stronger and happier than I’d ever been. I knew deep levels of healing were possible and despite so many disappointing results from my doctors, I had found deep in myself, a source of internal hope.

I discovered through my 4 years of strict veganism that my diet was a crucial part of reducing my symptoms to a tolerable level, but I wasn’t getting to that level of “better than before” that I wanted. I still had flare ups, bloating after meals, anxiety, sugar cravings and my hair was still falling. I experienced cycles of feeling better versus worse and that led me to trying many harsh elimination diets, candida cleanses and more. The results never lasted.

That hope led me deep down the rabbit hole of detoxification. I realized there must be some toxins stored deep in my tissues and cells blocking them from receiving the nutrient dense diet I was consuming. And girl was I right about that! I discovered I had been exposed to toxic mold, lyme disease, Epstein-barr virus (mono), parasites, heavy metals (mercury), excessive copper levels causing estrogen dominance and more, that were all playing into my daily fatigue, anxiety, and digestive issues.

Along my journey I went deep into these categories of toxicity and uncovered them one by one, and each protocol I did, I began to feel a little better, until one day I woke up feeling energized for the first time in YEARS. I felt happy, not just part of the day but ALL day. I started being able to hold space for others again, to live in a flow state, to access my femininity and creativity. My voice even sounded better and my skin improved, hair and nails strengthened and I no longer have ANY digestive issues, ever. So many wins.

The fact is, we live in a toxic world today. Over 80,000 new man-made chemicals have been introduced into our society in the last hundred years, which far exceeds the capacity for us to have pretested them all for safety. The regulations on food and environmental chemicals are relaxed at best. You can literally acquire mercury toxicity from breathing in city air or drinking tap water regularly, not just by eating too much tuna or having amalgam fillings as many people believe. Toxins are everywhere, silently affecting us and building up over time until our capacity to hold them is exceeded. What results is the “overflow” of a toxic “bucket” (aka – your symptoms!).

A common argument against detox goes something like this; “the liver and kidneys are our detox organs and they can process any toxins we encounter.” Ok, this may have been true prior to the advent of all of these man made toxins in the environment. But today it’s important that we respect that living in a modern, technologically advanced world with all of its perks, comes with some downsides. Sometimes we need a screen detox… walking away from our phones and laptops for a few hours or days. And sometimes our livers and kidneys need a reprieve too.

It’s especially important for women to detoxify regularly because of the influence toxins can have on their children through pregnancy and beyond. It is a known fact that women pass their stored heavy metals, such as lead and mercury, on to their babies in the womb. [1] [2] This can lead to a host of health issues, including autism [3] for the baby who is much less equipped to handle these poisons than their adult mother who passed them along. [4] I strongly advocate that all couples detox prior to trying to conceive in order to avoid any complications. I include men in this because the sperm quality can be affected by toxicity too.

Beyond pregnancy and conception, women want to be detoxifying regularly to take the stress off their detox organs and give the cells a chance to anti-inflame. Just as we need to rest and repair during sleep for 8 hours a day, a few times a year we should give time to our detox organs to rest and repair as well. One very easy way to do this is through fasting. Another, more accelerated way would be through a cellular detoxification protocol.

Another motivation to detox is for pesky symptom relief. Parasitic infections and candida overgrowth (which I lump into the category of bio-toxins) can result from a build up of heavy metals. [6] So by the time something like candida becomes an issue, there’s a strong likelihood heavy metals are already an issue and have been for quite some time, making the healing a bit complex. [5] This is just one reason why people often treat things like candida, and quickly become reinfected with overgrowth again; they didn’t get to the root of the issue which may have been stored heavy metals. This results in someone getting recurring yeast infections, for example, as well as associated symptoms like bloat after meals, fatigue, irritability, food sensitivities and more. You get the picture. Toxicity precedes symptoms.

Detox changed my life. It set me free from over a decade of struggle with food intolerances, digestive issues, anxiety/depression, cravings, addictions and more. As a woman, I think it’s important to share my story with other women and help people in a similar boat to finally free themselves from the cycle of symptoms through removing the upstream causes – environmental toxins.
